Victoria Day Weekend 2013

The 2013 OMDA sailing season began, as usual, with the Victoria Day Weekend Regatta held May 18 & 19 at Belwood Lake Sailing Club just outside Fergus (near Guelph).

Friday

Some eager participants arrived late Friday afternoon to set up.

Saturday

The first order of business was to get our boats rigged. Once Steve arrived with Charger's contents and motor from winter storage, we could get our committee boat ready to go.

There were some excellent sailing winds that kept the participants on their toes: lots of shifts and big gusts.

Steve provided some extra excitement at the end of the third race. Just after rounding the final mark, a big gust caught him and sent him for a swim. The water was quite refreshing, but Steve had his wetsuit on. He was able to recover fairly quickly and finish the race.

Sunday

Sunday morning began with another OMDA tradition: the President's pancake breakfast. Aleid was cooking up a storm for the hungry campers.

After breakfast, we set out on the water and squeezed in another three races.

Then it was time to come off the water for some lunch while Belwood held their regular Sunday race.

Don Alps, his daughter Heather and her boyfriend Brandon are planning to enter two boats in the Mirror Worlds in Ireland this summer. OMDA made a contribution.

Then it was time to take some of the youngest OMDA members out for a short sail.
